The decision swept away a host of lawmakers from Anambra state, including the senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Stella Oduah and her counterpart representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Andy Ubah.
Those also affected were members of the House of Representatives elected on the ticket of the PDP.
Speaking to The Nation, Oguebego who now takes over the leadership of the party as chairman in the state following the court’s sacking of the Chief Chukwudi Okasa-led executive that illegally foisted on the party unrecognised state executives said the verdict shows that God would never abandon his people.
He commended the Supreme Court judges for thoroughly going through the Anambra PDP scenario before arriving at their verdict while thanking members of the party for their patience all the while.
PDP
chairman Chief Ejike Oguebego says Supreme Court verdict that sacked
senators and House of Reps members from Anambra is the will of God.
On Friday, January 29, the Supreme Court sacked three senators and 11
members of the House of Representatives representing Anambra. The senators are Andy Uba, Stella Oduah and Uche Ekwunife.
Delivering judgment, Justice Binta Ogunbiyi held that the lawmakers were illegally imposed on the party by unrecognised state executive of the party led by Chief Chukwudi Okasa.
According to Ogunbiyi, the Chief Ejike Oguebego-led executive was the only constitutionally recognised leadership of the PDP to conduct the party’s primaries.
This decision prematurely terminates the tenure of a former Aviation minister Stella Oduah in the senate and also that of Sen. Andy Uba, the presidential aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Justice Ogunbiyi ruled that the candidates who emerged from the primaries conducted by the Oguebego-led group were the true representatives from the state to occupy the vacant seats.
Following the Supreme Court verdict, Chris Uba, the younger brother to Sen. Andy Uba and Prince John Emeka are expected to take over the seats vacated by Uba and Oduah respectively.
Also, a bye-election would be conducted to fill the senatorial seat occupied by Sen. Uche Ekwunife, who was sacked on December 2015 by the Court of Appeal.
A former Senator Annie Okonkwo is in line to represent the PDP in a forthcoming election to fill a senatorial seat held by Uche Ekwunife.
In December 2014, the Federal High Court had ruled that the Ejike Oguebego-led executive was the only constitutionally recognised leadership of the party in Anambra that could conduct the PDP primaries.
Despite that ruling, the parallel state executive of the PDP led by Chief Chukwudi Okasa went ahead to conduct parallel primaries.
